Self Realisation- Three Faces of a Person

How do you define yourself? Who are you?, This is the basis of our identity, our actions and the way we react to different circumstances in life.

The moment you get into the depth of this question, you see the entire world around you changing gradually. With a greater depth comes the realisation that, “the troubles you faced throughout your life were never an external factor.” It was always you.

Your ignorance of yourself is the real problem and the conflict inside you has become so over powering that it makes you look for a reason in the external world. As a consequence of your ignorance, you tend to use the external world as a tool to justify the conflict within you. But it’s high time now !!

Majority of us feel that they have 2 faces. The first face is governed by mind and is a product of worldly influences. Our personality is greatly influenced by our family, friends, values, culture, lifestyle and circumstances. These factors influence the way we perceive different situations and react to them. The Second face is also governed by our mind but may or may not be different from our first face. This is what we willingly express through our actions. This is basically a filtered output of the first face. Some of us have this and some of us don’t. This does’nt make us good or bad, it’s just the way we are.

Now comes the missing link. While understanding ourselves, we just consider the external influences and it’s consequences. We completely forget about the base nature where on which these external influences act.

Our entire life had been revolving around two false faces, both of them being a consequence of the external influences. Unfortunately, these external factors have to a great extent hampered the way we think about ourselves. This is the real problem. We know the world we are dealing with but we hardly know anything about the weapons we have : body, mind and the soul. As a result of this ignorance we utilise our resources ineffectively and always complain about the world being partial and unfair. In reality, the world is not partial, it is just that the other person is utilising his weapons in the way they are meant to be.

The third face of a person is the purest form. It is the most genuine form and free of all negativism. When understood completely, it can be your most powerful weapon. The Hindu scriptures define this as ” Jiv Atma”. The true powers of “Jiv Atma” cannot be explained in words and can only be realised over a period of time with constant effort and meditation. All that can be said now is that this ” Jiv Atma ” knows no boundaries and can achieve all that it wants.

The most amazing thing is that the nature of this third face is same for all. These three faces interact with each other to form ‘ You’.

The interaction of these three faces is very simple. For example, consider water, when you add sugar, it becomes sweet and when you add salt, it becomes saline. It will automatically take on a new colour when mixed with some other substance. The same substance- water, under different influences produce different results. The entire spiritual journey is about realising that your real nature is neither sweet nor saline, it is like water- tasteless and clear.

The third face is constantly influenced by the external world. Under these influences, your third face in a very short time develops a face – the personality known to you. This face is consciously filtered further to develop a face that you present in front of the world. When you completely understand the interplay of these three faces, you will be able to alter your personality to your advantage and avoid the negativeness.

This is the very first step towards your growth spiritual or otherwise.
